German Fountain.
Fatih, İstanbul
About Venue
An octagonal domed fountain at the northern end of Sultanahmet Square, the former Hippodrome. It commemorates the German Emperor Wilhelm II's visit to Sultan Abdülhamid II in 1898; its parts were made in Germany and assembled in Istanbul, and it was inaugurated on 27 January 1901. In the neo-Byzantine style, its dome rests on eight columns and is lined inside with gold-ground mosaics. Eight medallions alternate the tughra of Abdülhamid II with Wilhelm's monogram. The design is credited to the architect Spitta, the emperor's adviser, and the execution to the architect Schoele. It stands opposite the tomb of Ahmed I.
