Ahirkapi Lighthouse.
Fatih, İstanbul
About Venue
The story of the Ahırkapı Lighthouse, beside Kennedy Avenue at the foot of the Marmara sea walls in Fatih, goes back to 1755: after a galleon ran aground off Kumkapı, Osman III ordered a light with lamps lit every night to be set on the walls. The present stone tower was built in 1857 in the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid. The cylindrical shaft on a square base is 26 metres high; its balcony recalls that of a minaret, its light shines 36 metres above the sea and can be seen 16 nautical miles away. The coastal road built in 1958 separated it from the water. The tower is not open to visitors and is seen from the coastal road.
