About Venue
Ahi Yakup Mosque, on the slope north-east of Hacı Bayram Mosque and reached by a stone stair of eleven steps, carries the name of Ahi Yakup, one of the ahi leaders of Ankara in the reign of Bayezid I. The Arabic inscription over the prayer hall door is dated 1392; the Culture Portal treats it as the building date, the Ankara Governorate's book of foundation monuments as a repair date. It is a small neighbourhood mosque of plastered mudbrick on a stone footing under a tiled roof, without a minaret. Its value lies in its two mihrabs cast from the same plaster mould; the blue Miletus bowl set into the spandrel of the hall mihrab is considered the oldest known example of the early moulded plaster mihrabs of Ankara. The grave of Ahi Yakup lies in the burial ground on the north-east side. It was restored in 1984 and 2009.
