This story is about Félix de Vandenesse, a young boy from a noble but impoverished family.

After a rather difficult childhood, Felix went to Paris to pursue his education, but was forced to flee due to the events of the First Empire. He found himself back in Tours, his hometown, with his parents. In Tours, he fell in love with a woman he didn't know during a ball held in honor of the Duke of Angoulême. This intense love and the emotions it evoked brought him to the brink of illness, and his mother, concerned for his well-being, took him away from the city, to the countryside, where he could breathe fresh air and focus on himself. While walking in the countryside, he discovered a house of breathtaking beauty; it was so stunning that he wondered if the woman he loved might live there. He eventually had the opportunity to meet Madame de Mortsauf, the cause of his "lovesickness." There she was, the lily of that magnificent valley. Felix gradually formed friendships with the Count and Countess who lived at Château de Clochegourde. Although he believed they led a perfect and harmonious life, in reality, they were people suffering from illnesses and a silent unhappiness in their relationship. However, the Countess found in Felix a true confidant to share her sorrows and pains, and she would eventually experience unexpected hardships.

In this story, we will witness Félix de Vandenesse's unhappy childhood and his love for the virtuous Madame de Mortsauf, all through a long letter he wrote to his fiancée, Natalie.
