The Dangers of Tobacco Game.

"Ladies and gentlemen... My wife has instructed me to give a popular lecture here, for the benefit of a charity, on the dangers of tobacco. Since she has ordered it, I am obligated to speak."

A man stands at the podium: Ivan Ivanovich Nyuhin. The topic, ostensibly, is the harmful effects of tobacco on human health. However, when the doors of the hall close and the curtain rises, what you will hear turns out to be much more than a scientific presentation.

After thirty-three years of a stifled marriage, a life governed by rigid rules, countless disappointments, and debts that could never be repaid, and dreams quietly forgotten in a corner... When Nyuhin, for even a few moments, manages to break free from the shadow of his wife and finds himself alone with the audience, he sets aside his tobacco and begins to pour out the story of his own broken life.

This one-act monologue, a prime example of Anton Chekhov's tragicomic genius, walks the fine line between laughter and sorrow. In Nyuhin's anxiety, desperation, and pitiable confessions, we can all recognize familiar pangs from our own lives.

Don't miss this Chekhov classic, which will leave a lump in your throat even as you smile.
