"Şahları Da Vururlar," a musical comedy written and directed by Ferhan Şensoy in 1980, is being staged again after 42 years, bringing it back to audiences.
We begin our journey in 1940s Iran, where a citizen named Omar Khayyam finds himself in trouble due to a case of mistaken identity involving someone named Savak. Under the rule of Shah Reza Pahlavi, things in Iran are starting to unravel. The Shah's less-than-stellar personal life, the rumors circulating within the palace, and the intense power struggles all point to a period of unrest.
On one side, the people are struggling with economic hardship, and the sounds of rebellion are slowly growing louder. On the other side, a government detached from the people, and power struggles within the ruling elite. "They Also Shoot Kings" humorously depicts the opulent life of the royal court, the widening gap between the Shah and the people, and makes references to contemporary issues.
"What is Westernization, and what is it not?" asks "They Also Kill Kings." While the process that led to the execution of Omar Khayyam elevates some to the status of "heroes," Iran has become the central hub of conflicts that have no winners.
"Everyone is being arrested."
Mefailün failün.
The reason is unclear.
"Failatün is fascism. Failatün is ridiculous."
