Matei Visniec, one of the most important contemporary playwrights of absurdist theatre, has penned what is perhaps his most powerful and poignant work on the subject of war. The play fundamentally explores how war seizes the human mind. "The Horses in the Window" tells the stories of three women, spanning three generations and three different eras, through their suffering. In each segment, a man goes off to war, and the woman he leaves behind waits at home. Then, a messenger arrives to deliver the news of the man's death. Although these three stories take place in different times, they are essentially a recurring cycle. Times change, wars change, countries and soldiers change, but the fate of humans in war remains unchanged.
