"A Room of One's Own," based on the lecture by Virginia Woolf, returns to the stage on October 26, 2026, marking the 98th anniversary of the day she delivered the original speech.
Adapted from a work considered a foundational text of feminist literature, the play vividly portrays how women have been rendered invisible in literature from the 16th century to the 20th century, and how art and life have been dominated by a single gender, using striking examples.
A speaker-actor, along with three other actors who bring to life the thoughts, characters, and conflicts within their minds, collaboratively create Woolf's multi-layered world, which constantly blurs the line between fiction and reality. The theater production, "Painted Bird," reinterprets Woolf's literary language, characterized by stream of consciousness, internal monologues, shifting perspectives, and temporal and spatial jumps, through a feminist theatrical language.
Originally presented as a site-specific performance in 2019, this production has since been adapted into radio theater, stage adaptations, and reading theater versions. Now, with its fifth iteration planned for the 2026-2027 season, it offers a fresh interpretation of the search for "a room of one's own."
