Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi Semazen Töreni (7-30 Ekim)
Hidden in the heart of Beyoğlu: The Mevlevi Lodge
Escape the hustle and bustle of Beyoğlu and step into a hidden gem, often overlooked by guidebooks: the Kasımpaşa Mevlevi Lodge. Founded in the 1620s by Abdullah Dede, the sheikh of the Galata Mevlevi Lodge, it is Istanbul's third Mevlevi lodge. Restored during the reign of II. Mahmud, it remained silent for a century after the closure of dervish lodges in 1925, and has now been reopened, faithfully preserving its original character.
Just a short walk from the Galata Tower, yet a world away from the crowds, this place, described by TripAdvisor reviewers as "an oasis in the heart of Istanbul," is alive with history and tradition.
A Living Tradition, Not Just a Show
The lodge's whirling dervishes perform on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 5:00 PM. The "sema," a spiritual journey initiated by Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi in the 13th century, is a profound experience. In academic terms, the ceremony is called "mukabele"; in popular culture, it's known as the "sema show," "sema ceremony," or "whirling dervish ceremony." All terms refer to the same ritual. UNESCO added this ceremony to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008.
You will learn about the reasons why the dervishes whirl, what the music represents, and the meaning of the symbolic clothing. Then, accompanied by live Sufi music, the dervishes enter the hall and perform the traditional four "selam" (greetings) while whirling.
This is not a staged performance. What reviewers consistently emphasize is that the place is not "touristy": there are no special effects, no applause, and the atmosphere is reverent and simple.
Exhibitions and Traditional Art Workshops
Before or after the ceremony, you can visit the lodge's "Tekke Eserleri" (Sufi Lodge Artifacts) exhibition and the "Derviş Çeyizi" (Dervish's Belongings) Museum. On the upper floor, there is a gallery showcasing calligraphy, miniatures, and traditional Turkish arts. You'll find musical instruments, centuries-old manuscripts, and everyday objects used by the dervishes.
