Kara Kız - Ecem Erkek

The one-person musical play Kara Kız, written and performed by Ecem Erkek, is the story of a girl who grew up in a traditional family in the 90s. It is not the story of those princesses who were dressed in pink as children and took every journey on their fathers’ shoulders in full skirts, but the story of the girl who, wearing a wool dress bought at the market, leggings underneath and slippers on her feet, danced Mezdeke at her mother’s gold day. The story of the “dark girl” who won even the love given unconditionally to children through the power of her wrists and neck movements... I know, it sounds very familiar...

When our heroine is stood up by her boyfriend on New Year’s Eve and thinks she will be left completely alone, she will find the mixed cassette tape she recorded as a child. With that mixed tape, she will embark on a laughter-filled journey toward her childhood and youth, wash carpets in the street, iron her hair and dance halay at her cousin’s wedding.

On the way back, she will then hear a familiar voice that she blames for her insecure spirit... Her mother!

 This is a song she has never heard from her mother’s lips before. But at last, it is a song they can sing together. There could be no better New Year’s Eve. So, this toast is to us, Mom—come on, let’s sing it together!
