In the photo, her mother is a young woman, happy, playful, and free, having taken the picture herself with a camera before selfies were even invented. She begins her narrative by asking, "Had I forgotten that she was free – and happy – before I was born?"
Before she became trapped, enslaved by household chores, or confined within the walls of her home, she was a free, happy woman with dreams. My mother is one of those women whose life's path was abruptly closed off, leaving her imprisoned. She marries twice. She has two children from her first marriage, and three from her second. She tries to endure her first marriage for a while, despite her husband's problems with alcohol and violence, and her growing dislike for him, all for the sake of her children, but she can only manage it for a few years. Her second marriage is to the father of my stepfather, Edouard. What starts as a beautiful relationship quickly turns into a situation where she is treated as a domestic servant. She endures this marriage for twenty years. Then, one day, after twenty years, she suddenly ends it.
Edouard Louis, who grew up as a homosexual child in a working-class home in France, calmly recounts the story of his mother being treated as a domestic slave, without any sentimentality or favoritism. It is a story about a woman's relationship with the concept of "change." He meticulously follows his mother's journey from slave to woman, creating a narrative of liberation. He concludes his story with the following words: "I hope that this story, his story, can somehow be a place where he can find refuge."
