"It is not with a bang but a whimper that the world ends." - T.S. Eliot
Four women, who spent their childhoods, experienced their losses, and found love on an island near Istanbul, learn that the island will disappear within hours. They decide to say goodbye to the island with one last game, a game that will transport them to timeless places in their memories.
As they approach the end of their lives, they begin to question the ways they have coped with life, their relationships with each other, the places they belong to, and the contradictions between wanting to be seen and wanting to remain invisible.
So, will this investigation be enough to stop the island from disappearing?
The game, named after a whale that emits sounds at a 52-hertz frequency, which is believed to be inaudible to other whales, and is therefore known as the "world's loneliest whale," traces a history where being heard is not always possible.
"52 Hertz" is a devised theater production that draws inspiration from the autobiographical stories of the female actors in the Hangardz collective, who keep the Armenian cultural and artistic tradition alive on stage. Created through a collective process using devised theater techniques, the play brings to the stage a shared language centered around themes of memory, invisibility, and solidarity.
