What to Know About Museum Tickets

What makes museum visits in Istanbul expensive or reasonable is usually planning. Two people visiting the same places on the same day can end up paying very differently; a few rules change that. Closing days Most museums close on Mondays. Topkapi Palace closes on Tuesdays; the Harbiye Military Museum closes on Mondays and Tuesdays. So a plan that falls at the start of the week can come to nothing if not checked beforehand. Mosques are open every day but visits pause at prayer times. Queues and hours At the museums around Sultanahmet the queue lengthens towards midday. Being there at opening means seeing the same museum in half the time. Group tours arrive in the afternoon and the crowd grows. Some museums stay open into the evening on certain days in summer, and those are the quietest hours. Separate tickets Buildings in the same compound may require separate tickets. Topkapi Palace and the Harem are separate; Hagia Irene is a separate ticket too. If you plan to see two on the same day, ask at the desk whether a combined option exists. A planning suggestion Visiting more than three museums in a day is usually unproductive; attention scatters and the last one is not remembered.
