Classical Music in the Winter Season: Istanbul's Concert Halls

The season begins in October

In Istanbul, the classical music season traditionally opens in October and closes at the end of May. The winter months are both the busiest time for performances and the period when tickets sell out the fastest.

Cemal Reşit Rey (CRR)

Located in Harbiye, the CRR is one of the longest-standing concert venues under the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. It is named after one of the pioneering composers of Turkish polyphonic music. Its program is not limited to classical Western music; jazz, world music, and children’s concerts also feature on the calendar. Its acoustics are well-suited for chamber music and medium-sized orchestras.

Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM)

The new AKM in Taksim is one of the city’s most striking cultural landmarks, featuring a large stage designed for opera and ballet. In addition to the main hall, it houses chamber music venues, a library, and exhibition spaces. It is the premier venue for large-scale symphonic programs.

Süreyya Opera House

The most elegant venue on the Asian side. Opened as a theater in 1927, it was used as a movie theater for many years before being restored and converted into an opera house. Its intimate scale creates a closeness between the stage and the audience that is hard to find in other venues.

For first-time visitors

• Arrive at the venue at least 20 minutes early; you will not be admitted until the first piece has ended once the concert has begun.
• Do not applaud between symphony movements; wait until the entire piece is finished before applauding.
• Simply putting your phone on silent isn’t enough—vibration can still be picked up by the microphone, so turn it off completely.
• There is no formal dress code; smart casual attire is sufficient.

Starting with a familiar repertoire at your first concert makes the experience easier. Many organizations offer student discounts; open rehearsals at municipal concert halls are a great opportunity to experience the concert atmosphere for free.
