Koltuk Senin is an IBB Kultur AS application that allows Istanbul residents aged twenty-four and under to attend culture and arts events free. The logic is simple: seats left empty in the halls are opened to young people who cannot buy tickets, so the seat is not wasted and the price barrier is removed.
How it works
You look at the list of events through the application and choose one that suits. Places are limited, so the application must be made before the event; for concerts in high demand the allocation fills quickly. Once approved, you attend the event and enter with the record issued by the application.
Which events
The programme spreads across different points in the city and covers concerts, stage performances and culture and arts events. Events open at different venues through the season, so it is not tied to a single hall. Last season more than eight thousand young people attended events free this way.
Who can use it
Istanbul residents aged twenty-four and under. The age limit and the city condition are the basic criteria and are verified at registration.
Why it matters
The most concrete barrier to attending culture and arts events is the ticket price, and it affects students most. A concert or theatre ticket is a serious item in a student budget. This model, which puts empty seats to use, creates a new audience; the person hearing an opera or a symphony for the first time is usually stopped at the door by the price.
Practical suggestions
Allocations renew and the range widens at the start of the season, in September and October. In winter there are more options because indoor events concentrate; in summer demand rises for open-air concerts. Keeping notifications on means you hear when places open.
Other options to look at alongside
Exhibitions at Taksim Sanat and some programmes at the Serefiye Cistern are already free or low-priced. Student discounts apply separately at museums. Using these together makes it possible to build a full cultural programme on a student budget.
