About Venue
The parliament building in Bakanlıklar, with its 248 metre travertine front, is Clemens Holzmeister's last and largest work in Ankara. Fourteen entries reached the international competition opened in 1937; in the result announced on 28 January 1938 the first prize was shared between Holzmeister, Albert Laprade and Alois Mezara, and Holzmeister's scheme was chosen for construction. The foundations were laid in autumn 1939, the Second World War and financial shortages halted work for years, and after Holzmeister returned to Austria in 1948 his assistant Ziya Payzın carried the project. The building was completed in 1960 and opened on 6 January 1961. It is viewed from outside; a public open day is held on the first Saturday of each month.
