About Venue
Malıköy station on the Ankara-Eskişehir railway was the most important base of the Battle of Sakarya after the headquarters: ammunition and troops went to the front from here, the wounded received first treatment here, and the station served as an infirmary, a logistics centre and a military airstrip. By a decision of 2007 it was turned into a museum jointly by the General Staff, the transport ministry and the state railways, and opened on 1 June 2008. In the yard stand a monument to 5,713 fallen soldiers and a statue of Atatürk in civilian clothes; on the rails, a restored 1897 German-built locomotive used in the battle and a 1909 wagon; and two replica aircraft. The station building holds railway materials and images of the War of Independence.
