Music Teacher Training School (Mamak Cultural Center)
Demirlibahçe Mahallesi, Plevne Caddesi, Mamak
Mamak, Ankara
About Venue
This building in Demirlibahçe, on the eastern edge of Cebeci, is one of Ernst Egli's first commissions in Ankara. The Music Teachers' School, founded on 1 September 1924 to train music teachers for secondary schools, first worked in mud-brick houses; Egli's new building of 1927-29 gave the country's first music school a permanent home. In the mid 1930s the school became an academy and then the Ankara State Conservatory, and it was enlarged with new rooms in 1938. When the conservatory moved out in 1985 the building served as Mamak municipal offices; after 2005 it was restored and turned into a cultural centre. Today it holds theatre, exhibition and concert halls, a library, the municipal conservatory and courses, and it is the one Egli school where you can wander freely.
