Kartaltepe Mehmetçik Anıtı

Kartaltepe, six kilometres west of Polatlı, is one of the key points where the Greek advance was halted in the Battle of Sakarya. The 22-metre steel figure of the Mehmetçik on the hill rises, with its base, to between 32 and 40 metres depending on the source; it opened in August 2008 and the sculptor is Said Rüstem. Also known as the "Dur Yolcu" monument, it is dedicated to the 5,713 soldiers who fell at Sakarya. Behind it, the Sakarya Battle and Turkish History Interpretation Centre tells the battle with exhibition areas, information screens, interactive tables, light and sound shows and three-dimensional models. It lies in the Kartaltepe section of the Sakarya Battlefield Historical National Park; under the official schedule it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
