İnönü Mağaraları (Kirmir Vadisi)

Just north of Güdül, at the İnönü locality on the bank of the Kirmir stream, a multi-storey settlement carved by hand into a slope of volcanic tuff. Rooms reached by stairs, cross marks at the entrances and a large central chamber suggest, according to the sources, a village community living here in the Byzantine period; some sources say the caves were also used in Hittite times. Often compared to Ürgüp-Göreme in appearance, the site is protected as a first-degree archaeological and natural conservation area, and a 3.82-hectare section was declared a Strictly Protected Sensitive Area by presidential decree in 2020. The picnic area by the stream gets busy at weekends.
