Duatepe Monument: The Symbol of Victory of the Sakarya Field Battle
About Venue
The Duatepe Monument, located in the Polatlı district of Ankara, was built to commemorate one of the most critical moments of the War of Independence, the Sakarya Battle. Duatepe, one of the most significant points of the great victory won by the Turkish army under the command of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk against the Greek forces, is considered a strategic turning point in history.
The Sakarya Battle took place between August 23 - September 13, 1921, and the Turkish army achieved a great victory in its struggle based on the understanding that "There is no line of defense, there is a field of defense." Duatepe became an important symbol as it was the first hill recaptured by the Turkish army from the enemy during this battle.
Completed in 1990, the Duatepe Monument was built to commemorate this victory. When one climbs to the hill where the monument is located, the vast battlefield where the Sakarya Battle took place can be seen, allowing for a better understanding of the importance of this strategic point in terms of warfare. Structures symbolizing artillery batteries, trenches, and martyrdom areas are also present around the monument.
Beyond being just a monument, Duatepe holds great significance as a historical site that reminds of the sacrifices and heroism in the struggle for the independence of the Republic of Turkey. It is an important point that everyone who wants to feel the spirit of the War of Independence and see the traces of history in place must visit.
