A living room in the home of an English bourgeois family, furnished with English armchairs. An English evening.

Amidst the chaos and destruction, Mr. and Mrs. Smith will be hosting Mr. and Mrs. Martin in their home, clinging to the last vestiges of their English way of life. And what right does the maid, Mary, have to recite poetry to the Fire Chief when there isn't even a hint of a fire in the house?

If they're somewhere around London, who are they that drive us crazy? What are they that make us feel so alienated? What time will our reality arrive, if we're living in this illusion? Who benefits from maintaining this confusion?
Let's not try to understand everything. Let's just leave things as they are. (Or: Let's just let things be.)

Eugène Ionesco's play, a masterful blend of abstraction and absurdity, is being performed this season at the Play Workshop under the title "The Eccentric Diva," isn't it?
