Bir İdam Mahkumunun Son Günü

The Last Day of a Condemned Man.

"The Last Day of a Condemned Man" - A Play.

"The Last Day of a Condemned Man" is a work from the early years of Victor Hugo (1802-1885), written when he was just twenty-six years old. The purpose of this novel, in terms of its content, is very simple and clear: to demonstrate both the tragic and the absurd aspects of the death penalty. For a writer of Hugo's stature and genius, it is not difficult to prove such a point by presenting it with its human and ethical dimensions. However, the great importance of this novel lies in its other characteristics. This work is the first example of a novel written in the first-person perspective, using "I." This technique was previously unknown. Due to this unique feature, what began as a novel has been adapted for the stage many times throughout history. Hugo, by not revealing the name of the protagonist or the details of the crime, sought to highlight the profound impact of the death penalty on the human psyche, and to draw attention to how, contrary to the prevailing opinion at the time, it was a cruel and uncivilized form of punishment.
